Getting Started: Grocery Shopping

My favorite stores to shop at are  Hy-Vee, Target and Trader Joe's.  When first starting out gluten free grocery shopping took many long frustrating hours.....and I am happy to report it DOES get easier!  Mostly because I have gotten used to the certain brands that are safe and that we like... as well as our eating habits have changed in the past 5 years and we no longer eat as many processed foods.

Hy-Vee has a helpful website with a complete list of their name brand products that are gluten free.  Also on their site are gluten free recipes!  http://www.hy-vee.com/meal-solutions/special-diets/default.aspx

I think Hy-Vee has a great variety of gluten free products and most of their locations have one aisle completely dedicated to gluten free products so you don't have to search around in the health market trying to figure things out.  On a side note, most of you probably already know this, but shop Hy-Vee's Health Market on Wednesdays and get 10% off!  :)

Target also has some gluten free products (as does Walmart)...such as the Betty Crocker gluten free baking mixes as well as gluten free crackers and pasta.  This is great once you know where things are located and you know what you are looking for, but when I was just starting out, my favorite place to shop was Hy-Vee because all the gluten free stuff is in one easy location!

Trader Joe's has a gluten free listing of their products. Check it out at http://www.traderjoes.com/lists/no-gluten.asp  You can print off the list at home or ask for one at the store.  They are extremely helpful there and will go out of their way to help you find things!

Whole Foods carries many great gluten free products as well.
